GEF Small Grants Programme
In Thailand, UNDP manages projects funded by the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) Small Grants Programme, which focus on demonstration of community-based natural resources and environmental management. This programme, active in Thailand since 1994, has provided funds for hundreds of projects through a national steering committee comprising scientists, NGO representatives, technical experts, and government representatives, as well as a national coordinator from UNDP.
In the recent past, projects have focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reversing water degradation, rehabilitation of land and offering alternatives for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), and sustainable use of biological diversity. Of the 270 projects undertaken in Thailand, 44% have fallen under the international waters area, 24% under climate change, 15% under biodiversity, 14% have been multi-focal area projects, and 3% have been land rehabilitation projects.
