Despite past success in reducing its spread, HIV/AIDS remains a cause for concern in Thailand. There have been warning signs of a new wave of infections; and the virus continues to spread among certain vulnerable groups. past success in reducing its spread, HIV/AIDS remains a cause for concern in Thailand.

The work of UNDP Thailand in HIV/AIDS focuses on three priorities:

  • Promoting broad-based policy dialogue and analysis, to contribute to a truly multi-sectoral and rights-based response to HIV/AIDS priorities into national, provincial and local strategic development planning.
  • Capacity building, focused on the provincial and local levels to foster a more inclusive, rights-based, gender-sensitive response to HIV/AIDS, with a special focus on internally mobile populations and their home communities.
  • Fighting stigma and discrimination by supporting efforts to promote the respect and protection of the human rights of people living with HIV/AIDS

One current project aims to enhance the implementation of grants from the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Thailand by building the capacity of local partners for improved multi-sectoral local response programming. (project brief, project document)

UNDP also promotes South-South Cooperation on HIV/AIDS in partnership with the Thai Government, by sending experts to share Thailand’s experiences fighting HIV/AIDS to other developing countries, and by disseminating Thailand’s best practices and lessons learned. More information about this cooperation can be found in the Thai-Africa Partnership publications on the Comprehensive Response to HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care workshops in Nairobi, Kenya and Gaborone, Botswana.

UNDP is a co-sponsor of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). For further information, go to the UNAIDS page for Thailand.
