Millennium Development Goals

Thailand has achieved many of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at a national level well in advanced of the 2015 targets, and has set a timeline for ambitious targets that go beyond the original goals (“MDG-plus”). However, some regions and groups are being left behind, and disparities are striking.
UNDP supports Thailand in setting and monitoring MDG-Plus targets, going beyond aggregate national achievements to focus on specific regions and groups. UNDP is also helping to build a country-level coalition to promote action on the MDGs.
Current Programme
Thailand suffers from a lack of data at the local level, which makes it difficult to formulate local development policy. There is also a need to develop forms of data assessment that are more participatory and reflect the needs of local people. In response, the Royal Thai Government and the UN system have a joint programme to strengthen the country’s capacity to produce high-quality data down to the local level.
As part of this joint programme on MDG monitoring and statistical strengthening, UNDP Thailand will provide support to the national statistical office and provincial statistics offices, including strengthening capacities at both levels, improving public outreach, and providing in-depth knowledge about methods of evaluating the impact of poverty on projects and policies.
UNDP Thailand is also working the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security’s Office of Women’s Affairs and Family Development to set up Thailand’s first Gender Disaggregated Database. There is a critical need in Thailand for data specifically on women to improve policy development and decision-making at the national and local levels, and to help Thailand meet its obligations to international commitments such as the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
The Office of Women’s Affairs and Family Development is also UNDP Thailand’s primary partner in an advocacy campaign for MDG 3+: doubling the number of women in the national parliament, sub-district administration and senior levels of the civil service. Recent highlights of this campaign include a radio spot competition for university students and support to a meeting of women from across the country to ensure women’s interests were taken into account in drafting the country’s new constitution.
Provincial Millennium Development Goals Reports
The third Provincial Millennium Development Goals Report for Thailand will focus on Trang province, in the South. UNDP Thailand is now working closely with the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) and the Thailand Environment Institute (TEI) in conducting the study for the report. This follows on the successful MDG provincial projects in Mae Hong Son in the North and Nakorn Phanom in the Northeast. The provincial MDG reports provide authorities at the provincial and local levels with important comparative information that help them monitor development and come up with improved strategies for achieving the MDG and MDG+ targets.
