Africa-Asia Forum Opens Business Opportunities to Thais

24 February 2004: A workshop, organized by the United Nations Development Programme, on the upcoming third Africa-Asia Business Forum, yesterday, brought together Thai business executives, member corporates from Board of Trade, and government officials to seek investment and trade opportunities in West Africa.

The third Africa-Asia Business Forum (AABF III) will be held in Dakar, Senegal, from 13-15 April 2004. The purpose of the Forum is to promote joint ventures between African and Asian firms, leading towards more trade, transfer of technology and capital flows between the regions.

The Director of Special Unit for Technical Cooperation of UNDP, Mr. Ravi Rajan, during his visit to Thailand, revealed that, currently, there are 269 African companies registered to participate in this Forum. Participating companies are from diverse sectors ranging from food processing, building materials and construction, medical equipment/pharmaceuticals, and information technologies.

Facilitatd by UNDP, a comprehensive selection process of companies profiles will be initially screened. A registered company with an annual turnover of US$ 500,000 will be considered.

The six Asian countries identified under this initiative of the Africa-Asia Forum include China, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Korea and Thailand.

The first Africa-Asia Business Forum was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in October 1999, followed by a second one in Durban, South-Africa in 2001. Both of them proved to be very successful initiatives.

The third Africa-Asia Business Forum is supported by the Government of Japan, UNDP, and some other international organizations.
