5 April 2004 - As part of a follow-up to suggestions at the "Thailand National Consultation on HIV/AIDS" recently organized by the United Nations Development Programme, a summary of the International Guidelines on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights is now translated into Thai.
Dr. Vitit Muntabhorn, a renowned Human Rights expert, one of the panelists at the consultation has stated that a translation into Thai of the international guidelines would increase public awareness, in particular those associated with HIV/AIDS.
It is expected that the information will get attention of relevant government authorities to better promote and protect the human rights of people living with HIV/AIDS, their families and communities.
According to the guidelines, there are many steps that States can take to protect HIV-related human rights and to achieve public health goals. The twelve guidelines elaborated by the Consultation for States to implement an effective, rights-based response.
The Guidelines rely on states to review and reform public health laws, criminal laws, and other protective laws that protect vulnerable groups, people living with HIV/AIDS and people with disabilities from discrimination in both the public and private sectors.
In essence, States should ensure that government and private sectors develop codes of conduct regarding HIV/AIDS issues that translate human rights principles into codes of professional responsibility and practice.
