UNDP Gives More Funds to Tsunami-Stricken South
31 January 2004, Bangkok – Today UNDP announced another 4 million baht in support to the relief efforts in the South, in addition to the initial 4 million baht donated by UNDP to the Thai Government the day after the disaster. These additional resources will be channelled through a UNDP “Rapid Relief Response Fund” for quick procurement of urgently needed relief items.
The purpose of this Fund is to provide flexible, rapid and responsive support to the Thai authorities in terms of procurement of emergency relief items to meet the ever-evolving demands for tsunami disaster response and impact mitigation.
Through this mechanism, the Royal Thai Government will be able to call on the UNDP whenever it has difficulty in identifying suppliers of specific items needed in the South. The requests will be immediately passed on to the UN’s Office of Project Services (UNOPS) that specializes in quick procurement from suppliers in Thailand, in the region and beyond. Four large generators and four large water purifier machines for use by hospitals have already been procured through this mechanism. Other items will follow.
