Brazil donates 16 tons of Humanitarian Aid to United Nations for Tsunami-stricken Thailand
Saturday,1 January 2005 – Bangkok: The Government of Brazil has today generously donated a large quantity of humanitarian aid to the United Nations for the massive relief operation in the Tsunami-stricken southern Thailand.
A Brazilian Air Force plane landed at Don Muang International Airport at 10:30 a.m. this morning with a shipment of 8 tons of canned and dry food and 8 tons of medicine and was handed over to the United Nations.
The Ambassador of Brazil, H.E. Marco A.D. Brandao said that “We are saddened and shocked by the human suffering and devastation in the South of Thailand and we want to help the people and government of Thailand in these difficult times”.
Joana Merlin-Scholtes, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Thailand thanked the Government of Brazil and stated that “This donation is urgently needed for the relief effort and is an admirable show of solidarity between two countries of the South”
The arrival of the humanitarian aid was witnessed by Siree Bunnag, Ambassador-designate of Thailand to Brazil.
The official handover from the United Nations to the Royal Thai Government will take place in a few days. In the meantime, the humanitarian aid is immediately being flown down by the Thai authorities to the South for distribution to the affected provinces.
