Aid for trade in the WTO countdown: Where is Thailand in the Mix? UNDP Chief gives his views

What: You are kindly invited to a press briefing with the new Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Kemal Dervis.

When: Wednesday, November 16 at 11:45am at the UN Conference Center building - Meeting room B on the 1st floor - Rajdamnern Nok Avenue.

“Trade is the greatest engine of growth," says Mr Dervis. "Trade in the short-term very often creates winners and losers. If you want to work, you need to compensate at least the neediest and most vulnerable losers. The whole debate of trade has to focus on compensation mechanisms”

Former economy minister, Dervis played a crucial role in shoring up Turkey's fragile economy. Kemal Dervis will be in Thailand from 14-16 November, visiting with senior Thai officials to discuss the country’s status as an emerging donor of economic assistance in the region and provider of preferential trade concessions and substantial foreign direct investment in neighboring countries. His visit seeks to promote a continued dialogue in Thailand about the importance of aid, trade, and investment in reducing poverty and development disparities. He will also discuss UNDP’s plans to assist contributions to the long-term challenges of tsunami recovery and reconstruction throughout the Indian Ocean basin.

Dervis continues on to Pakistan, where he will join UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on a tour of earthquake devastated areas of the country on November 18th and will represent the United Nations with the Secretary-General at an international conference on earthquake recovery in Islamabad the following day.
