UNDP Launches MDG Carbon Facility in Thailand

28 September 2007 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched the MDG Carbon Facility in Thailand today in an event co-hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning. The MDG Carbon Facility Initiative is intended to broaden access to the carbon market for business and organizations, while promoting emission reduction projects which contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

“The launch of the MDG Carbon Facility in Thailand will allow the Thai private sector and Thai entrepreneurs to play a direct role in this important work,” UNDP Resident Representative Gwi-Yeop Son said in a speech at the launch. “Conservation technologies and alternative energy are now some of the highest-profile areas of ‘green business’ around the world. Through the Facility, both private enterprises and public institutions can access resources to invest in technologies that cut carbon emissions.”

The global carbon market has grown rapidly, through such instruments as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) that was created as part of the Kyoto Protocol. Under the CDM, projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries and contribute to sustainable development can earn certified emission reduction credits. Industrialised countries with emission reduction commitments under the Kyoto Protocol buy CERs to cover a portion of their commitments.
