Private Sector to Enhance Thailand’s Capacity to Support Neighbours through South- South Cooperation

20 June 2008 – A Workshop on Private Sector Partnership on South-South Cooperation was organised for the first time by UNDP and the Thailand International Cooperation Development Agency (TICA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in partnership with UNFPA, UNICEF and UNIDO Thailand.

The meeting agreed on the need to establish public-private sector partnership as a driving influence towards improving Thailand’s capacity and efficiency, as a new donor, to extend support to its neighbouring developing countries through South-South Cooperation.

Ms. Ayumi Fujino, Representative and Head of the Regional Centre in Thailand of UNIDO made the opening remarks. The Meeting was co-facilitated by Mr. Vudhisit Viryasiri, Director of International Organizations Partnership Branch, Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ms. Sirisupa Kulthanan, UNDP Assistant Resident Representative.

Participants shared valuable information about their respective experiences and ideas, and suggested that a discussion forum and other communication channels should be established to ensure regular dialogue and exchanges between the public and private sectors. Concrete proposals submitted by participants included the creation of internships, training, and the sharing of resource centres and databases. Such initiatives would take advantage of the private sector’s existing facilities and networks with support from the Government and UN agencies.
