THAI PEOPLE COOL DOWN THE PLANET WITH BOTH HANDS
5 June 2009 –
UNDP Thailand has celebrated World Environment Day by launching an inspirational new book that highlights what Thai people are doing in their everyday lives to combat climate change.
- 2°: Cooling Down the Planet with Both Hands is a collection of articles featuring Thais of different ages and backgrounds, who have adopted innovative approaches to reuse, reduce and recycle.
Pig farmers, villagers, entrepreneurs, and school children are just some of the diverse range of people who tell their stories about the steps they are taking to lessen their impact on the environment.
“Climate change is a global problem, but these citizens show that everyone can play a part in their local communities to find long-lasting and sustainable climate change solutions,” said Yuxue Xue, UNDP Thailand Deputy Resident Representative.
“These impressive initiatives are inspirational. I urge everyone to follow such examples and take action to improve the environment they live in. By doing so, they will not only build healthier communities, but they will also help reduce the effects of global warming and preserve the beauty of Thailand.”
As part of the launch, UNDP Thailand hosted a public dialogue that focused on how every citizen, community, organization and business sector can play an important role in cooling down the planet.
UNDP Thailand supports many programmes aimed at promoting action on climate change, including the recently launched “Clean City, Clean Mind” initiative.
Through this initiative, UNDP Thailand provides its policy expertise to Thailand’s cities to partner them in becoming more environmentally sustainable, while ensuring high standards of accountability and transparency.
Korat City in Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality has already signed up to the initiative and discussions are underway with Trang, Chonburi, and Lampang to engage in similar cooperation.
- 2°: Cooling Down the Planet with Both Hands is available in both Thai and English and can be downloaded at: http://www.undp.or.th/resources/publicationsall.html
