Mayor Nimit Jivasatikarn of Lampang Municipality is giving opening remarks at the “Towards the Low Carbon City” Workshop.

Lampang City Plans for ‘Low Carbon’ Way

2-3 December 2009, Lampang - Eighty participants from various groups in Lampang City come together to plan for Lampang to reduce greenhouse gas emission in city development.

The “Towards the Low Carbon City” Workshop was co-organised by Lampang Municipality, Thailand Environment Institute and UNDP. The activity is part of the‘Clean City Clean Mind’ Initiative, launched by UNDP earlier this year. The initiative aims to provide technical assistance and capacity building support to local government organisations to take steps to tackle climate change. “Lampang City may be small but we pride ourselves as being a city of innovation. We would like to take up a new challenge to become a low carbon city, with a high quality of life for our residents,” said Mayor Nimit Jivasatikarn.

Representatives from across the area, including executives, Municipality staff, representatives from Lampang’s ceramic and hotel industries, local communities, and schools, brainstormed on what needs to be done and how Lampang City can reduce its carbon footprint.

Issues identified as high priorities included waste management, reducing energy and electricity consumption, applying city planning as a means to create more green space, and the promotion of alternative transportation. The city will now set up a working group to finalise its low carbon action plan and identify pilot projects.

Lampang is one of the pilot cities UNDP is collaborating with under the Clean City Clean Mind Initiative. Others include Korat Municipality and Khon Kaen.
