Mine Action: The Road towards “Mine-free, Zero Victim”
30 January 2009 - The Thailand Mine Action Centre (TMAC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), signed a project document today aimed at improving livelihoods for vulnerable in underserved areas in Sakaew Province in a bid to develop “mine free, zero victim” – a transition towards sustainable development.
The two-year project called “Capacity building to support the Thailand Mine Action Centre”, focuses on enhancing capacities of TMAC and relevant government agencies to collect accurate and up-to-date disaggregated data, for policy planning and priority setting purposes. The project also aims to minimize immediate safety threats for local communities, promote participation by local authorities and communities and increase their sense of ownership of mine awareness and risk management. It is also hoped that the project will contribute to an increase in Thailand's capacity to meet the obligations of the Ottawa Treaty.
The project was initiated by TMAC in late 2008 in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. TMAC will work closely with UNDP and other UN agencies, as well as NGOs based in Thailand. The Tambon Administration Organizations at the local level will be supported to streamline and improve planning for socio-economic services to landmine survivors.
The total project budget is $ 1,000,179 which includes support from UNDP amounting to US$ 505,550 and in kind contribution of US$ 387,579 from Thailand Mine Action Centre project.
