The 26 December 2004 tsunami was the worst natural disaster experienced by Thailand in its recent history. A total of 8,212 people were killed or were missing presumed dead. Over 400 communities along the Andaman coast were affected, and almost 5,000 houses were destroyed or damaged. An estimated 150,000 people in the tourism and fisheries sectors lost their jobs or livelihoods. Total damage was estimated at US$ 1.6 billion.

As part of a coordinated effort by the United Nations Country Team in Thailand, UNDP played an important role in recovery and rehabilitation efforts following the tsunami.
